Bedrooms have the longest unbroken walls in most houses, and that changes what the work is about. On a ten- or twelve-foot run there is nowhere for a pattern repeat to hide, so laying out the drops so the repeat lands evenly and the seams fall away from the bed and the window becomes the main craft. The black chinoiserie mural that wraps a whole room in this gallery, cranes and blossoms continuing past two doors, is that layout problem at its most demanding.

The first decision is usually one wall or four. A single wall behind the headboard, in a textured paper, a grasscloth, a plaster effect or a painterly mural, gives the room a focus and keeps the rest quiet. Papering every wall works best with calmer palettes and smaller repeats, like the trellis and ditsy florals shown here. Sloped attic walls, gables and tray ceilings all appear in these photos, and a tray ceiling papered in the same pattern as the walls, or in a contrasting one, is an option that is easy to overlook.
