Mudrooms, laundry rooms, closets and small offices are the cheapest places to try a pattern. A laundry room with cabinets on two walls might leave only a few square feet to paper, so a print that would be a big decision in a living room becomes an easy one; both laundry rooms and the locker-lined mudroom here are exactly that. Windows, built-ins and appliances break the wall up, so there is more cutting per foot but far less material.

Hallways are the opposite: long, narrow and brushed past all day. A durable, wipeable paper matters more there than anywhere else in the house, and the narrow hallway shown here keeps the pattern above board-and-batten so the lower wall takes the scuffs. Stairwells add a height problem. Drops on a stair wall can run well past standard ceiling height, the paper has to be cut on the rake of the stairs, and getting a ladder or platform safely into the well is part of the plan before the first strip goes up.
