A child's room is the one space where the wallcovering is almost certain to be changed. A flamingo print or a watercolour jungle mural that suits a crib rarely survives to the bunk-bed years, so it is worth asking early whether the paper is strippable or peelable, and whether the wall will be primed in a way that lets it come off cleanly later. The plaids and windowpane checks that appear so often here are a middle road, quiet enough to outlast the nursery stage.

Durability matters most from the floor to about waist height, where crayons, toys and small hands do their work.
